I had the opportunity to attend the opening night performance of Susannah by Houston Grand Opera at the Wortham Theater, and I was not disappointed. From beginning to end, the production was a memorable experience, although I particularly enjoyed the second act. The first act felt a bit slower, while the second act featured an intense finale that was a highlight of the evening. My favorite scene took place in a church, where several characters gathered to repent. Seeing the characters react to Susannah entering the church, as well as the accompanying music helped make the scene my favorite.
Some of the evening’s highlights included the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra, which brought Carlisle Floyd’s score to life, and Sylvia D’Eramo, who stepped into the leading role of Susannah, replacing Angel Blue.
Originally composed in 1955 by American composer Carlisle Floyd, Susannah has become one of the most frequently performed American operas, and it’s easy to understand why.
With a runtime of just over two hours, the production offered incredible performances, thoughtful costume design, and an engaging evening of live music and theater. Overall, it was a pleasure to experience Susannah at Wortham Theater and another reminder of the wonderful performing arts Houston has to offer.
