Opened in May 1987, the Wortham Theater is located in Downtown Houston’s Theater District and is home to both the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet. It was designed by Eugene Aubry of Morris Architects. It’s owned by the City of Houston and was named after the Wortham family whose foundation donated a significant portion of the funds needed. Both the Houston Opera and Ballet began their tenure at the theater in autumn of 1987.

I’ve had the opportunity of attending quite a few performances at the Wortham Theater over the years and have thoroughly enjoyed my time there. As of October 2026, some of my favorite performances have included the Houston Grand Opera’s performances of Faust, The Sound of Music, West Side Story, Breaking the Waves, and many more. I’ve also enjoyed plenty of performances from the Houston Ballet including The Nutcracker, Good Vibrations, and more.

Whether you’re a Houston native or traveling to the city, I highly recommend checking out a performance here. It’s without a doubt one of my favorite theater venues in the city.
