The Girl on the Train: Play Review

The Girl on the Train at the Alley Theatre in Downtown Houston delivered a tense, thrilling experience. Driven by strong ensemble performances, sharp storytelling, and striking visual design, the production excels from start to finish.

Set in modern day England just outside London, the story unfolds following a sudden murder that leaves every character under suspicion. At the center is an alcoholic protagonist whose frequent blackouts and ill timed presence position her as the primary suspect, forcing the audience to navigate the mystery through her unreliable memory.

The Alley Theatre continues to demonstrate a clear mastery of suspense, a craft refined over years of staging classic murder mystery productions, particularly those adapted from Agatha Christie. The cast performs with undeniable confidence and fluid chemistry, moving through complex psychological shifts with ease. What truly elevates the staging is the use of dynamic digital screens, which seamlessly mirror the velocity and disorientation of moving trains while accentuating the raw emotional states of the actors.

All in all, The Girl on the Train was an exceptional performance that reinforces why the Alley Theatre remains a vital staple of the Houston arts scene.
